Body weight and conception

Body Mass Index and Contraception

Our body really is a temple when it comes to preparing and planning for a baby.

It is well documented that fertility and body weight are directly linked. This means that being both over and underweight can and does affect your ability to conceive.

By the time you realise you are pregnant your babies vital organs have already started to develop

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important factor to consider when preparing for a baby. Your BMI can be easily calculated for example. Someone who weighs 60kg and is 1.65 metres tall:

Weight in Kgs:                    60

Height in Metres:            1.65 x1.65  =  22.06

An ideal BMI for adults is between 18.5 and 24.9.  Your nutritional status before pregnancy and during the very early weeks of pregnancy (before even realising that you are pregnant) may be even more important than the diet you eat once your pregnancy is confirmed.

By the time you realise you are pregnant your babies vital organs have already started to develop (They have developed by 6 weeks) You need to be in the best health to give your baby the best start.

A healthy lifestyle is important at every stage of pregnancy but particularly important when trying to conceive.
