Half of your weight gain going forward will go directly to baby

Getting the right nutrition during pregnancy can positively influence your baby's future health so continue to include a healthy balanced diet with a variety of nutrients right up until baby arrives - and beyond!

Development

Your baby is spending 80% of their time asleep and dreaming. Under their skin, the fat layer is getting thicker and they can now regulate their own body temperature. They will triple in weight in your final trimester with half of your weight gain going directly to baby. As you are nearing your due date there is lots to start thinking about. You will need to consider where baby will sleep, what you need to buy and also start discussing possible names! A birth plan - which is a detailed plan of what you would ideally like to happen during labour - is also something that you may want to discuss with your doctor or midwife soon. Download our birth plan template at the link below.

Nutrition

As your baby undergoes their final development before birth it is important not to skip meals so that you supply them with a steady stream of nutrients for their healthy growth and also keep your own body fit and healthy before labour. Some mums-to-be suffer from water retention at this stage, leading to swollen feet and ankles. But don’t let this put you off drinking water, as keeping hydrated can actually relieve symptoms, and both you and your baby need plenty of fluids. Aim for up to 8 glasses of water a day. However, if your hands or face start swelling up, call your doctor as it could be a symptom of a health problem.

Most of baby's bones will now harden, except for their skull. This is to help ease exit through the birth canal

Your own body will also react to help ease the birth. A hormone called relaxin will help you joints and ligaments to soften slightly which will make it easier for baby to move out of the pelvis.

Breathe easy! Your baby will soon drop lower into your pelvis, relieving some of the pressure from under your ribs

You may find as they get bigger that you have a little trouble breathing. This is because your internal organs have moved up in response to your growing uterus which can put some pressure on your lungs. As baby drops in the next couple of weeks this should ease up.
