Your priority at this special time should be looking after your baby and being good to yourself.  Don’t focus too much on your pre-pregnancy weight and clothes, chances are you are still spending a large part of the morning in your pyjamas so just go with it. There will be lots of time to focus on getting back to your old self again but don’t feel under pressure.

What can help is to make sure you are eating well and choosing the right kinds of foods – if you are snacking on creamy cakes and chocolate bars with your afternoon cuppa, you might find you have swings of low energy, leading to a cycle of more snacking. Try to choose fresh foods, wholemeal breads and cereals, low-fat dairy products and colourful fruits and vegetables throughout the day.  These foods will help you to get all the nourishment you need for this busy time of your life.

And as for weight loss? Well it takes 9 months to make a baby and why not give yourself 9 months to get your body back in shape afterwards? Eat well, take regular exercise (good for your figure and good for your head) and if you are breastfeeding that’s another great way to get back in shape.  Breastfeeding can burn up to an extra 500 calories each day so that will help you use up the energy stores your body put away during your pregnancy.

Above all, be kind to yourself and enjoy your new baby without worrying about your weight.  Slowly but surely you can regain your previous body shape in the months ahead.
