I don’t know if you are like us over the past month, since the RTE Primetime programme on the crèches, but we have had constant debates over the childcare issue! It’s wrecking my head. Currently Jack is still attending crèche 2 days a week; I kept it up to keep his place and the routine for when I return to work. Now our house is split!! My husband wants to look into other options for both of them for when I go back to work, I just don’t know. On one hand the programme will ensure all crèches pull their socks up for fear of any further exposure (even though they should’ve been doing that anyway!) and there would be no disruption for Jack as he is comfortable in going there and knows it and the staff. But on the other hand, would it be better to look at other options??

The reasons I picked a crèche in the first place were as follows:

  • Trained staff with first aid skills
  • Age appropriate toys/activities etc. for their development
  • Meals by trained chef
  • Didn’t matter if a staff member was sick, as always cover
  • Interaction with other children and so on………..

Now I’m thinking about the option of a child-minder with Jack in a playschool in the mornings? Then Jack has the upheaval of moving somewhere new and Jessica doesn’t have the interaction with other children, but she has Jack so I suppose it’s not like she wouldn’t play with anyone. My mother described it as a home from home type care. I just don’t know – it’s bad enough leaving them to go back to work but the childcare debate regardless of whether it’s your first/second child will never be easy! There are pros and cons to everything; it’s just a matter of picking the right one for you.
