Make It Personal
There is no ‘one size-fits-all’ combination for planning a baby shower. The day can be as extravagant or as low-key as mum and guests prefer. The best consideration to keep in mind is making the day personal, helping mum-to-be to feel loved and extra special at an often-overwhelming time.
Popular Baby Shower Themes
Baby showers don’t have to be themed, but it can add a bit of structure to your décor planning and create fun photo opportunities for the guests.
12% of people in Ireland have a baby shower to reveal the gender of their baby.* There are lots of creative ways to surprise guests with your wonderful news from balloon pops, confetti cannons or cutting into a cake with a pink or blue filling! There is always a lot of excitement at gender reveal baby showers and it’s a great way to involve your nearest and dearest in the special moment.
Jungle Baby Shower
With animal themes still proving popular in 2020 from baby clothes to nursery décor, this is an adorable theme for a baby shower. There are endless ideas you can incorporate from this theme, start by collecting a range of stuffed animals like lions, giraffes and elephants which will act as the centrepiece. Add giant palm leaves, wooden dishes for snacks and any green accessories to complete the look!
With pastels being a huge trend in 2020, why not make it your baby shower theme? Mixing yellow and mint green with neutral tones is ideal if you don’t know the gender of the baby. You may already have some pastel accessories to use but balloons, cakes and tablecloths are usually easy to find in these shades.
Many Instagram-worthy decorations can be made at home if you have a touch of creative flair or know someone who does. If you’re having a themed baby shower, you can really go to town here; everything from the food to the décor can fit with the preferred theme. Everything from balloon archways to donut walls have been used to jazz up a baby shower. Check out our Instagram worthy baby shower ideas for more inspiration.
Food & Drinks
Food and drinks normally match the shower theme but you really can’t go wrong with any sweet treats and nibbles to keep your guests occupied between games.
A popular option to keep everyone at the baby shower happy is a grazing table. This can include cheese, fruit, nuts, vegetable sticks and dips but make sure you avoid any foods that aren’t suitable for pregnant women. Ensure everything is pre chopped and ready to be picked at by your guests. Add some greenery and this will double up as your centrepiece too.
As mum-to-be will be alcohol free until the baby is born, mocktails and alcohol-free bubbly are a great alternative for beverages. Simply omit the alcohol from classic cocktails like mojitos and strawberry daiquiris to make them suitable for your pregnant guest of honour!
Cakes & Sweet Treats
Many people choose to get a cake made to fit their baby shower theme but it can be just as effective to make or buy a chocolate or vanilla sponge cake and order a cake topper to decorate. Other popular trends include cake pops, donuts and chocolate dipped strawberries – all delicious treats for your guests to enjoy.
Baby Shower Party Favours
Favours are not a necessity but if you wish to do them you can choose something relatively small that is still really special for guests. Some ideas:
- ‘From my shower to yours!’ – A bar of luxury soap for all the guests
- ‘Pop it when Mum pops!’ – mini prosecco bottles for friends to enjoy when the baby arrives
- ‘Bun in the oven’ – let all guests take away a cupcake
No matter what is trending, the baby shower doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’ or ‘Instagram worthy,’ it just needs to be enjoyable for mum-to-be. What matters the most is having those closest around her to celebrate the arrival of baby and enjoy each other’s company on the special day.
