Kick start your new year with a vitamin rich fruity green juice during pregnancy. Here are a couple of recipe ideas to get you started but really you can experiment with any fruits or vegetables.  Including a rainbow of different fruit and veg means you are getting lots of different benefits from each – here are just a few reasons why it is a great idea to include some of these ingredients in your diet during pregnancy.

  • Fruits such as oranges and pineapples are a great source of vitamin C which is important for a healthy immune system, particularly in the colder months.
  • Celery has a high water content to keep hydration levels up and contains Vitamin A which is important for your baby’s healthy vision.
  • Spinach is a great leafy green vegetable that is rich in iron for your baby’s brain development. Vitamin C aids iron absorption so combining these with vitamin C rich foods makes a great pairing.
  • Kale is a great source of folate which is essential pre conception and for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy for your baby’s healthy growth.
  • Apples contain fibre which can help to prevent or relieve constipation during pregnancy (Ref: FSAI, 2011)

Citrus Green juice

Makes 2 servings

1 Orange, peeled

½ Lemon, peeled

1 Apple, peeled, cored and chopped

½ Cucumber, chopped

3 Celery Stalks, chopped

Ice

 

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients together in a blender or food processor.
  2. Pulse until smooth.
  3. Serve in a tall glass.

 

 

Green Pineapple

Makes 2 servings

1 Cucumber, chopped

1 Green Apple, peeled, cored and chopped

½ Cup of Pineapple chunks

4 Kale leaves or handful of spinach leaves

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients together in blender or food processor.
  2. Pulse until smooth.
  3. Serve over ice.
